We had the blessing of attending two of the talks with the Dalai Lama in his three-part San Diego series: "Compassion Without Borders". His message is clear and simple: we are one. The idea of "I and them" is not reality.

When asked how a person can practice forgivness when the other sides actions continue to be criminal he answered by saying that in those actions the other side is creating negative circumstances for themselves. (karma). We should have compassion for them because of the negative karma they will have to live out.

His Holiness's message is to practice selflessness. Consider the welfare other sentient beings before ourselves. When we do this we are truly being compassionate to ourselves.

Below are two powerful quotes:

"Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive."

"World Peace must develop from inner peace. Peace is not just mere absence of violence. Peace is, I think, the manifestation of human compassion."
